内容記述 | Abstract : Environmental education at university level is important because the developmental features ofuniversity students are suitable for critical learning and for creating an awareness of their roles in resolvingenvironmental issues. Therefore, in Japan, environmental education has been included in the curricula ofmany universities since the late 20th century. However, most of these universities include environmentaleducation among the elective subjects of liberal arts, and for most students with the exception of those whomajor in environmental studies these subjects may be their only opportunity to learn about theenvironment. Educators who plan to include environmental education in their liberal arts classes shouldimplement strategies that maximize the effects of learning under limited conditions. I have practicedenvironmental education in my biology classes that were taught as a part of the liberal arts course. Further,I have evaluated the changes in students over a period of three years. Based on the results, the followingthree proposals are presented : (1) an in-depth knowledge of specific environmental issues is moreeffective in achieving the educational goals than superficial knowledge on broad issues ; (2) practicaldevices are necessary to make students aware of the fact that environmental issues concern all persons,including them, and (3) the goals of environmental education and the methods employed to achieve themare important regardless of the subject title. | |||||
